This quote / expression has become a running joke with some friends and I. It’s to the point that a shirt and multiple items for my office were purchased for me. This is something I say a lot, most of the time as a joke but it’s also a mindset I try to live each day. Let me explain.
My mindset is to attack each day trying to be better than I was the day before. For me to do that on my “off” days I use this expression as a form of motivation. With everything I’m involved in I have to be able to provide my best to others. The expression of NO, is a hard and often lost word in my vocabulary. For me to be Kind of a Big Deal I have to give each day and each opportunity everything I have. I’ve used lessons learned and observations to put forth my best when my best wasn’t always good enough.
I know to some that I’m truly a big deal. I have a responsibility to them, to protect, to provide for and to mentor. I have to provide guidance and at times hard truths about life experiences. I will make mistakes and I will be wrong, from time to time, but in those times I have to learn and make myself better as well as the ones who depend on me. When those that look to me are recognized for something they’ve done I couldn’t be happier. My goals are no longer about what I want to do it’s about what I want others to accomplish. I recently got one of the best messages I’ve ever received. In short, I do my best to go watch my guys play in other sports or activities they’re involved in. I had a parent tell me it meant more to their child that I showed up to watch them play another sport. It showed I really cared about their kid as a person and not just a player. They did utter it, You are really a Big Deal to us and him. The messages I’ve gotten back from parents and players for the notes and photos I provided my guys this year have made every argument, every hand drug field and every lost hour of sleep worth it. Coaching is a passion of mine and something I will truly miss.
I truly hope that years from now I will have had a positive impact on some of my guys and they will use my mindset and be Kind of a Big Deal to themselves and others.
